Selecting Fonts in Eloqua Email

Since the University’s recent transition to RedHat fonts in early January 2023, we’ve been getting questions about how to use fonts in Eloqua emails.

Email-friendly fonts

We recommend using the most common email-friendly fonts instead of custom fonts like RedHat to make sure your subscribers see your text as you intend.

Eloqua’s email builder includes: Arial, Arial Black, Courier New, Georgia, Tahoma, Times New Roman, Trebuchet MS, and Verdana as the most widely supported font options. Verdana is the font recommended by University Marketing if RedHat is not available. It’s best to select Verdana or one of these other standard Eloqua fonts.

This is because not all email clients can display all fonts equally.  A subscriber’s email client will not display your message in RedHat if this font style is not compatible with their system. For example, Outlook, Apple Mail, and Gmail all have sets of default fonts that differ from each other.  Email clients can also set a predefined “fallback” typeface, which might be far away from the one initially intended.

Using RedHat

If you would still like to use UW-Madison’s new RedHat fonts in your email messages, there are a couple options:

  • Add RedHat to your images
Consider using the font in your email images to help represent the UW–Madison design and aesthetic. UW Marketing can create beautiful custom email banners for you using RedHat.
  • Use CSS to add RedHat
Follow UW Brand’s recommendations for linking to a hosted version (CDN) of the font files maintained by University Marketing or linking to Cascading Style Sheet (CSS). See also the Marketing automation team’s resources for HTML and CSS on our Eloqua Knowledge Base.
